Chef John Prom
Chef John Prom was born in Phnom Phen, Cambodian in 1979. He was the youngest of 9 children and was born while his family was fleeing the war that took the lives of 3 of his siblings and thousands upon thousand of other innocent Cambodians. Shortly after John's birth, his family made it across the border into Thailand and into a refugee camp. They lived in this refugee camp for over a year hoping for a miracle until one day in 1981, an American family sponsored the Prom's into the United States giving them a chance at a future filled with many opportunities.
John's family worked together cleaning office buildings in Denver, Colorado and saved every penny they had in hopes to someday open a Asian Restaurant so they could share some of their homeland's tradition with the country they now called home. The family opened their first Chinese Restaurant in Mitchelle, SD in 1987. John's entire family worked at this restaurant as an united team with one goal in mind, to start another restaurant. As soon as they had saved enough money, John's oldest brother remained with the first restaurant and the rest of the family moved to a nearby town called Huron to start another restaurant. This trend continued throughout the 80's and 90's and to date, the Prom's own multiple restaurants in South Dakota, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. Each sibling proudly runs their own restaurant... except John.
Being the youngest in the family, John was able to see exactly how hard his family had to work for what they have now and John decided rather than slave in a restaruant like his siblings, he would put himself through college. After graduating highschool, he moved to Laramie, WY in 1999 and while working in an Italian restaurant and at the University of Wyoming's Catering department as head Sous Chef, he put himself through college. In 2003, John graduated from the University of Wyoming with a bachelors degree in Business Administration/Management. Soon thereafter, he married his high school sweetheart and they relocated to Tulsa, Ok where John was quickly hired by the largest vending and catering company in the Tulsa region.
Upon working in Tulsa for a few years, John quickly realized that he too, like his family, desired to share the delicious cuisine of his country with the people around him. So John founded Wok This Way. Now John spends his time teaching the citizens of his new country the cooking traditions of his former country and he couldn't be happier.
